Dr. Gerald L. Coates
To Dr. Gerald L. Coates, Jr. dentistry has proved to be immensely satisfying, whether it is giving a smile back to someone that hasn’t smiled in years or treating a medically compromised patient, knowing that treating their oral disease will improve their overall health outcome. Dr. Coates feels blessed with those that have trusted him with their healthcare for so many years. He feels challenged with the patients that present opportunities for him to learn and grow. It is not just smiles that we treat—it’s the people. In Dr. Coates’ opinion, trust is the epitome of success. There is no “I” in team; it is a cliché, but each team member is imperative for total patient success. Dr. Coates trusts and relies on his team as they guide the patient to total health and a beautiful smile.
Dr. Coates has always known that he wanted to make a difference and help people. After graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry, he decided to go to dental school. Dr. Coates attended the Medical University of South Carolina to earn his Doctorate of Dental Medicine and graduated in 1983. Over the last three decades, Dr. Coates has seen how dentistry — and the way we provide it — has changed for the better. Continuing education allows him to change with these advancements so he can provide the latest in technology and care to his patients. He believes that he should always be learning and growing, not only for personal growth but for his patients, so that he can be the dentist they deserve.
Outside of the office, Dr. Coates has a wife, Valinda, and two boys, Jerry lives in Wilmington and Anderson lives in Illinois. They have an English lab called Ozzie. Dr. Coates loves cooking and any activity outside in nature, including gardening, hunting, fishing, riding his tractor, boating, and exploring the local waters. In the past, he was active in the Boy Scouts of America leadership. He and his sons were Eagle Scouts. Through scouting, he has seen the difference that quality leadership and spending with our youth makes.
