Meet Our Doctors

Gerald L. Coates, Jr. DMD, PA
Dentistry has proved to be immensely satisfying, whether I am giving a smile back to someone that hasn’t smiled in years or treating a medically compromised patient, knowing that treating their oral disease will improve their overall health outcome.
I feel blessed with those that have trusted me with their healthcare for so many years. I feel challenged with the patients that present me opportunities to learn and grow. It is not just smiles that we treat—it’s the people.
In my opinion, trust is the epitome of success. There is no “I” in team; it is a cliché, but each team member is imperative for total patient success. I trust and rely on my team as they guide the patient to total health and a beautiful smile.
Education and Continuing Education
I’ve always known that I wanted to make a difference and help people, so after graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with my Bachelor of Arts in chemistry, I decided to go to dental school. I attended the Medical University of South Carolina to earn my Doctorate of Dental Medicine, and I graduated in 1983.
Over the last three decades, I have seen how dentistry — and the way we provide it — has changed for the better. Continuing education allows me to change with these advancements so I can provide the latest in technology and care to my patients. I believe that I should always be learning and growing, not only for personal growth but for my patients, so that I can be the dentist they deserve.

Outside the Office
My wife, Valinda, and I have two boys: Jerry lives in Wilmington and Anderson lives in Illinois. We have our English lab Ozzie to keep us company at home. I love cooking and any activity outside in nature, including gardening, hunting, fishing, riding my tractor, boating, and exploring the local waters. In the past, I was active in Boy Scouts of America leadership. I was an Eagle Scout and my boys were Eagle Scouts. Through scouting, I have seen the difference that quality leadership and spending with our youth makes.

Madison Bissette, DDS
Dr. Madison Bissette grew up a native of eastern North Carolina, born and raised in the small town of Wilson. She attended North Carolina State University, where she graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of science degree in biological sciences. She then continued her studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she earned her Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree.
Supplementing her education with elective courses in maternal & child health and pediatric dental emergencies, Dr. Bissette loves all aspects of general dentistry, but finds special joy in providing well-rounded and comprehensive care to young families. She is an active member of the American Dental Association, the North Carolina Dental Society, and the Academy of General Dentistry.
Dr. Bissette has spent every summer in Carteret County with her family since she was a child. She has considered the surrounding areas a home away from home since as long as she can remember and is very excited to be making this tight-knit community her permanent residence. In her free time, Dr. Bissette can be found spending time with her family and friends, as well as her two dogs, Gauge & Clyde. She enjoys spending time on the water, attending as many UNC sporting events as possible, and continuing to pursue her lifelong passion for horses.
